Electric Bike Vs Petrol Bike: Price, Maintenance and Future Scope

Hi There. This article is about Electric Bike versus Petrol Bike and their Price, Maintenance and Future Scope comparison. Let's analyse whether to buy an electric bike or a petrol bike.

What is the difference between an electric car and a petrol/diesel car?

A petrol bike works on an internal combustion engine.  Electric bikes are either partially or wholly powered by electric power.

Environmental considerations

CO2 gas is released from the silencer of a Petrol bike and it is very harmful to the environment. Electric bikes are more environmentally friendly because they use little or no fossil fuels namely petrol.

Electric vehicles have lower running costs because they have fewer moving parts to maintain

Ok. Let's get back to the article.

Fuel Price Comparision

As of now, electric bikes are more expensive than petrol bikes, at the time of purchase. But once you factor in the operating cost, the math looks radically different.

Here is the calculation. If you charge your electric bike from 0 to 100% then it will cover a maximum distance of 100-120 km. The cost of electricity per unit for this distance will be from 2rs to 5rs depending on which area you live in. An electric bike requires 4 units to be fully charged, so your total running cost will range from 10rs to 20rs. Travelling 1 km on an electric bike will cost us 10 to 20 paise.

Now, on the other hand, if we talk about petrol bikes, their average mileage is 40 to 50 km per litre.  Petrol cost per liter will be around 90 to 100 rupees. So for every 1km it costs you 2rs on a petrol bike.

Service and Maintenance

An EV will rarely require servicing of tires and not much maintenance is required. The batteries in them last a long time like around 3-7 years before they need to be replaced.

In the case of a petrol bike, you need to service them frequently which also becomes a big issue in terms of price. Servicing and maintenance of petrol bikes are very expensive.

Charging Stations on the rise

There are more number of petrol or refilling stations for petrol bikes but since the demand for an electric bike is rapidly increasing,  there is a big number charging stations being setup in India.

Future

Electric vehicles are the future of the automotive industry, and all Fuel based vehicles are expected to be replaced by EVs by 2050.
