Tips to get a stuck charging cable out of the charging port of your electric car
Hello People. This article gives you some tips to get a stuck charging cable out of the charging port of your electric car.
Have you faced this problem of stuck charging cable while charging your electric car?
It seems to be a very common problem amongst electric vehicle owners. Here are few simple solutions of how to get the stuck cable out of the charging port.
Firstly, please ensure your car is unlocked. If you electric car is locked, it might be locking the cable into the car. So first steps when detaching any electric car from a charging station is to
- Unlock the car using the key. At this stage the ev charger or 3 pin charging cable should still be plugged in and charging.
- Detach the ev charging cable from the car first. Detach the cable from the car before detaching from the wall.
- Detach from the charging station. Once the ev cable has been detached from the car, the pins should no longer be live. So the next step is detaching from the wall.

Ok. Let's get back to the article.
Push the cable into the car or charging station and pull to detach
The cable needs to be pushed in before detaching, this will effectively unlock the cable from the car. This will allow you to simply pull the ev cable out from the charging station or the car.
Problem of stuck charging cable in Type 1 Charger
The Type 1 Charger is used mainly in-home charging systems. It is smaller in diameter than Type 2. They are often stuck due to failing actuators in the socket. The problem is the device that locks the charging cable in place during the charging procedure.
In OK condition, the actuator should release the cable when you want. But if it fails, it can be a mechanical or electrical failure and your cable will get stuck. As always, you shouldn’t try to use force since it could damage the whole assembly.
The first solution is locking and then unlocking the car from your key fob. If it is just a glitch, it should release the cable immediately. However, if the cord is still stuck, try pressing it further and then pulling it out.
In some cases, applying pressure helps to release the accusatory and free the cable from the socket. The third solution is to locate the manual release, which is often found in the trunk, just behind the charging point.
Cars like Tesla have it in the upholstery and once you located it, just pull it, and it should free your cable immediately.
Problem of stuck charging cable in Type 2 Charger
The problem with the Type 2 charging cable is essentially the same i.e., failing locking actuators, but the solution is a little bit different.
Type 2 cable has a different shape, its locking mechanism is visible on the top of the socket, and you will notice that a small latch will pop out and lock your cable while the car is charged. When the actuator fails, the latch will stay in a closed position, forbidding removing the cord.
The solution is to use a screwdriver or similar object and manually press the latch back, freeing the cable from the socket. Using sheer force could damage the socket and break the latch, which is very expensive to repair.
You have to be careful and not to use too much force and break the latch itself. Gently press the latch back until it is safe to remove the cable from the socket.
But if the above solutions fail, there are a few things to remember:
Don’t panic
The charging connection is a physical, mechanical one between your car and the charging station. If the handle went in, it will generally come out again. It won’t be stuck forever. It can be fixed using expert's help.
Don’t try to apply force
If charging plug is stuck to your car, use extreme caution if you think you have to try it off with a screwdriver or any other tool. Not only could you damage the car or the charging station, but there’s also a risk of hurting yourself.
Call Customer Care
On most charging stations, there’s a customer care number to call if you have any kind of question. Call it, explain the problem, and ask for advice.
Complain about the problem to the business executive
If the charging station is sited at a business or parking garage, try and find someone on site you can tell about the problem. That person may not know how to fix it, but if there’s a fault, it should be registered.
Call an emergency service
If the above steps don’t work, call for assistance from your breakdown company or in the case of cars with built-in assistance. That way, if anything goes wrong during the removal of car and charging station, you’ve got a mechanic on hand to help.
